İz Öztat interrogated by 20 anynomous people I Maçka Sanat Galerisi
İz Öztat departed from the sound recordings of exhibition talks in Maçka Sanat Galerisi’s archive for her work titled “I am not dealing with triangle, square and circle” in 2012 and has been invited to work with the archive once again as the gallery is about to close. Preferring to produce a new document to be included in the archive, Öztat revisits interrogation as a methodology that she encountered in the recorded talks.
İz Öztat positions herself as the interrogated subject by appropriating a sentence from the recordings as the title of the work, “I prefer to answer questions”. She invited 20 people —including artists from different generations, art critics, curators, her mentors and friends—to interrogate her anonymously in Maçka Sanat Galerisi. The sound recording of the interrogations that last over 20 hours are exhibited along with a publication of questions compiled from the interrogations and are introduced to Maçka Sanat Galerisi archive as a contemporary document.
